Perhaps it's appropriate that I leave the Backstage column after more than three years on a high, just as "Rent" is rolling into town.
I went to the opening last week at the National Theatre and was deeply moved by the piece. As has happened so many times since my mother began dragging me to plays when I was a child, I experienced a familiar medley of emotions -- happiness, sadness, love, anger and especially profound insight.
